The Diploma Supplement – a tool to promote international recognition and transparency of academic achievement
Description
The Diploma Supplement is a document accompanying a higher education diploma, providing a standardised description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies completed by its holder. It is issued by higher education institutions according to agreed standards, with the aim of improving international ‘transparency’, and fair academic and professional recognition of qualifications. Graduates in all the countries in the Bologna Process (EHEA member countries: http://www.ehea.info/pid34250/members.html) have the right to receive the Diploma Supplement automatically, free of charge and in a major European language.
The University of Groningen was awarded the Diploma Supplement label by the European Commission for successfully implementing the Diploma Supplement in 2009. The label was renewed for the 2013 – 2016 period, with special mention of the newly-introduced ECTS Grade Distribution Table as an ‘example of good practice’.
All students of the University of Groningen receive a Diploma Supplement automatically and free of charge with their Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates, in line with ECTS requirements. It is provided in English and includes the Transcript of Records. Alongside information on courses taken at RUG, the Diploma Supplement includes a record of the mobility period(s) carried out by the student under the Erasmus+ programme, listing the location of the mobility, the courses undertaken during the mobility, the date, Dutch grade, and the number of ECTS credits obtained. A sample Diploma Supplement can be viewed on the university’s public website http://www.rug.nl/education/find-out-more/studying-at-university/specimen-diploma-supplement.pdf
